The Step Brothers men’s Alcoholics Anonymous group began in 2023 with a simple but heartfelt idea — to bring members together around food and fellowship before our weekly meeting. What started as a few men gathering in each other’s homes soon became a defining element of who we are. Mealtime offers more than convenience for those coming straight from work — it creates space for genuine connection, allowing longtime members to stay in touch and giving newcomers a chance to feel at home before the meeting begins.
As our fellowship grew, we moved from homes to Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Castro Valley, then to Calvary Lutheran Church in San Lorenzo to accommodate the increasing number of participants. These moves strengthened our roots in the East Bay community and deepened our commitment to making recovery approachable, inclusive, and connected.
At the heart of Step Brothers is a shared belief that lasting recovery comes from actively working the Twelve Steps as written in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. Our 90-minute meetings begin with a focused reading from approved Alcoholics Anonymous literature relating to the step of the week. An invited speaker then shares personal experience working that step, followed by open sharing from the group, giving every member an opportunity to reflect and connect through the step in their own recovery.
Today, Step Brothers continues to grow as a welcoming men’s fellowship where real connection and honest conversation play a vital role in the recovery process — nourishing both body and spirit before we join together in the work of the Steps.
Step Brothers is a growing fellowship of more than twenty active members from all walks of life. Our group includes men with varying lengths of sobriety — from those just beginning their recovery journey to those who have been walking the path for years. Together, we share experience, support, and accountability, creating an environment where every member has a voice and a place at the table.
